The Movement

Exhibit


The "Movement" exhibit is an educational exhibit designed to tell the history of Italian American culture and the achievements and accomplishments of the NATIONAL ITALIAN AMERICAN COUNCIL (NIAC). There are three (3) separate sections to the exhibit:
  • 1st section (front). The Internment of Italians, and Italian Americans in the United States of America.
  • 2nd section (middle). The Christopher Columbus campaign and what is being done to save and advance the holiday and parade.
  • 3rd section (end). Media Representation of Italian Americans. This section describes how unfairly Italian Americans are treated in the mass media expecially the hollywood media, and the negative effect it has had upon our culture.

The "MOVEMENT" is an educational exhibit about the Italian American experience starting from world war II to the present. The "MOVEMENT" curator is ANTHONY E. LA PIANA, founder & president of the NATIONAL ITALIAN AMERICAN COUNCIL (NIAC). The "MOVEMENT" has been on display at college campus, the Illinois State Building in the Chicago Loop. And on display at the DALEY CENTER - EAST LOBBY every year since year 2000. The "MOVEMENT" captured the attention of the electronic media in 2011 and 2012. In 2011 during the month of October CBS Channel 2 news reported on The "MOVEMENT". And On 10-23-12 CBS Channel 2 news reported on the exhibit on its 6pm evening news with Legend Anchor Bill Kurtis. Many Italians who arrived from Italy during that period living in the United States today will testify the journey taken to come to America was a difficult and trying experience. La Piana, founder & president of NIAC appeared as an expert witness in Washington DC on Capital Hill before the Congressional Judiciary Committee on October 1999.

La Piana, founder & president of NIAC delivers his testimony before House Congressional leaders in Washington DC in the Sam Rayburn building in 1999 on behalf of legislation HR 2442 The Italian American WarTime Violation Act. HR 2442 passed both the U.S. House and Senate and eventually was signed into Law by then President William J. Clinton. Anthony E. La Piana, founder & president of NIAC successfully lobbied HR 2442. And HR 2442 is the most significant piece of legislation signed into law on behalf of Italian Americans in the history of the United States. Anthony E. La Piana, founder & president of NIAC was chosen by former chairman Henry Hyde (R)6th district of Illinois to help organize the Congressional Judiciary sub-committee Hearings for HR 2442. La Piana & NIAC were at the forefront of the "Movement" an awareness campaign bringing attention to the American people the civil rights abuse visited upon Italian Americans during this period. La Piana was the national activist and NIAC the leading organization behind this major civil rights Movement.

In 2001 it was James Ryan (R) and Rod Blagovich (D) competing for the governors job in Illinois. Blagovich was elected and was eventually impeached in 2009 by the Illinois State Legislature.
